RECIPE EDITORIAL STANDARDS

Recipe Standards

How GUSTANA builds recipe content

At GUSTANA, recipe content is designed around a simple goal: make cooking information clear, practical and useful in a real kitchen.

That means thinking beyond the ingredient list. A useful recipe should help readers understand what they need, what to do, how long it may take, how much it makes and what details could affect the result.

These standards explain how we aim to structure, review, update and present recipes, kitchen guides and related cooking tools across GUSTANA.

01

Our Goal

Recipes should be clear enough to cook from and useful enough to return to

We build recipe pages around the decisions people actually make while cooking: ingredients, quantities, timing, serving size, equipment, substitutions, storage, reheating and the questions that commonly come up along the way.

The goal is not to add information simply to make a page longer. Supporting guidance should be included when it makes the recipe easier to understand, prepare or use again later.

The GUSTANA approach

Readers should be able to identify the important information quickly.

When relevant, a recipe should make it easy to understand:

  • What ingredients are needed
  • How ingredients should be prepared
  • What order the cooking steps follow
  • Approximate preparation and cooking time
  • How much the recipe makes
  • Important temperature or equipment information
  • Useful substitutions or variations
  • Storage, freezing and reheating guidance
  • Relevant kitchen tools or calculators

Not every recipe needs every section. The information included should match the recipe itself.

02

Our Core Recipe Standards

01

Clear ingredients

Ingredient lists should use understandable quantities, practical ingredient names and enough detail to reduce ambiguity.

When relevant, preparation instructions such as chopped, softened, divided or melted should appear where the reader needs them.

Optional ingredients should be clearly identified rather than presented as required.

Measurements should also remain internally consistent throughout the recipe.

02

Instructions in a logical order

Recipe instructions should follow the actual cooking sequence.

Important actions should not be hidden inside unnecessarily long paragraphs, and steps should be separated when doing so makes the process easier to follow.

When useful, instructions may include:

  • Cooking temperatures
  • Approximate timing
  • Visual cues
  • Texture cues
  • Equipment settings
  • Resting or cooling time

Timing alone is not always enough. When appearance or texture is a better indicator, the recipe should explain that too.

03

Useful timing and yield information

Prep time, cook time, total time and serving information should help readers plan realistically.

Times may vary depending on equipment, ingredient temperature, portion size and other cooking conditions, so they should be presented as practical guidance rather than guarantees when appropriate.

Yield and serving information should also stay consistent throughout the recipe.

04

Relevant supporting guidance

Some recipes benefit from additional information beyond the core method.

Depending on the recipe, this may include:

  • Ingredient substitutions
  • Recipe variations
  • Storage instructions
  • Freezing guidance
  • Reheating instructions
  • Make-ahead information
  • Equipment notes
  • Troubleshooting
  • Serving suggestions

These sections should solve a real reader question rather than simply repeat information already provided.

05

Useful kitchen tools

GUSTANA recipes may connect readers to practical kitchen calculators and converters when those tools genuinely make the recipe easier to use.

Examples may include:

  • Cooking measurement converters
  • Recipe scalers
  • Ingredient weight converters
  • Cake pan converters
  • Portion calculators
  • Cooking timers
  • Temperature converters

A calculator should not imply more precision than the underlying information allows.

For example, converting an ingredient from volume to weight may require ingredient-specific data rather than a single universal conversion.

06

Consistent updates

Recipes can change over time as information is clarified, corrected or improved.

When a material part of a recipe changes, related information should remain consistent across the page.

This can include:

  • Ingredient quantities
  • Instructions
  • Yield
  • Timing
  • Temperatures
  • Storage guidance
  • Recipe cards
  • Structured data
  • Supporting notes

A visible update should not leave older conflicting information elsewhere on the same recipe page.

03

How GUSTANA Develops Recipe Content

Understand the reader’s intent

Before building a recipe page, we identify what the reader is actually trying to cook, learn or solve.

The structure of the page should support that intent.

Build the recipe structure

Ingredients, instructions, timing, yield and relevant supporting sections are organized into a clear cooking sequence.

Review for consistency

Quantities, instructions, timing, temperatures, servings and supporting information should agree with one another.

Add useful supporting tools

Converters, calculators and other GUSTANA tools may be connected when they make the recipe easier to prepare or adapt.

Maintain the page

Recipe content may be corrected, clarified or updated as necessary.

04

What Different GUSTANA Content Types Mean

Recipe

A page centered on preparing a specific food or drink.

Readers can generally expect ingredients, instructions, timing, yield and relevant supporting guidance.

Kitchen Guide

Practical cooking information that is not centered on one specific recipe.

A guide may explain techniques, ingredients, equipment, comparisons, troubleshooting or other kitchen topics.

Calculator or Tool

An interactive utility that produces a result based on information entered by the reader.

Some results are straightforward calculations, while others may depend on assumptions or ingredient-specific information.

Collection

A curated group of recipes organized around an ingredient, meal, cooking need, season or other useful theme.

05

Substitutions

Ingredient substitutions can affect more than flavor.

Depending on the recipe, changing an ingredient may alter:

Texture Moisture Structure Browning Cooking time Appearance Overall flavor

When a substitution is suggested, GUSTANA aims to explain meaningful differences when those differences are likely to affect the result.

Important distinction

A substitution should not be presented as identical when it is not.

06

Nutrition Information

When nutritional information appears on GUSTANA, it should be treated as an estimate unless specifically stated otherwise.

Actual values can vary based on factors such as:

  • Ingredient brands
  • Exact quantities
  • Portion sizes
  • Substitutions
  • Preparation methods

Nutrition information is intended to be a practical reference, not a guaranteed measurement.

07

Food Safety

Food safety

Cooking temperatures, storage guidance and other food-safety information require additional care.

When a recipe involves relevant food-safety considerations, GUSTANA aims to rely on appropriate authoritative guidance rather than unsupported assumptions.

More information about how we approach these topics is available in our Recipe & Food Safety Policy .

08

Corrections and Updates

If something is wrong, we want to fix it

Recipes should be corrected when reliable information reveals an error, inconsistency or unclear instruction.

Readers can contact GUSTANA with the recipe URL and a description of the issue through our Contact page .

When a correction affects important recipe information, related sections should be reviewed so that the page remains internally consistent.

09

A Note About Testing and Review Claims

Our principle

We only describe a process that actually happened

GUSTANA does not label a recipe as professionally tested, independently reviewed, chef-developed, test-kitchen verified or tested a specific number of times unless that statement can be supported by the actual process used for that recipe.

The same principle applies to product reviews, kitchen tools and other editorial claims.

Clear and accurate language is more important than making a page sound more authoritative than the underlying process supports.

GUSTANA RECIPE STANDARDS

Our Standard Is Usefulness

A strong GUSTANA recipe should help someone move from “What do I need?” to “I know what to do next.”

The exact structure can vary from one recipe to another, but the goal stays the same: practical information, clear instructions and no unnecessary obstacles between the reader and the food they want to make.
